We were the smallest group to take part.  We sang two songs on our own.  There were Kusimama and Chim Chim Cheree.  We also joined all the other schools at the end to sing the final song Going Up a Yonder.

On the 22nd June we took part in a Music Generation Concert in Colaiste Bhride, Carnew.  As a treat, before we went to the concert we had pizza in school.
There were 7 schools that took part from around the area.  We were the smallest group to sing.  We sang two songs on our own, Kusimama and Chim Chim Cheree.  We  also sang Going Up a Yonder with the other schools.
Our parents came to watch us sing.  I really enjoyed singing on stage and had a great time listening to all the other schools singing.

Tearfund Ireland
On May 29th Emma Lynch from Tearfund came to talk to the children about their work in Africa.  She talked about a typical child's day there and compared it to a typical child's day in Ireland.
On May 16th Grace Garde spoke to the children about mini beasts and plants in the school garden.  As it was a wet day she explained that there were lots of slugs and snails about us as they are not afraid of drying out.  They don't appear on sunny days.  She told us lavender is good for bees, but lots of insects and slugs don't like the smell of it and won't eat it.  Grace explained that the Yew trees that grow in the Churchyard are poisonous for everyone.  She thought they were 300 years old.

April 24th – 28th was ACTIVE SCHOOL WEEK.

We had an action packed week.  On Monday, we went swimming to Courtown which will continue for the next 5 weeks.  On Tuesday, Miss Kinch set up an obstacle course in the playground.  There were many different stations including weaving, hurdles, balancing, throwing and running.  On Wednesday, we had Hannah Nolan for a Zumba Dancing session!  The children really enjoyed this activity!  There were lots of tired legs afterwards..... On Thursday we travelled to Tomnafinnogue Wood where we had great fun taking part in a Scavenger Hunt.  It was a lovely morning for a walk and we saw lots of interesting things.  We finished off our action packed week with a Soccer Tournament for 1st to 6th class while the Infants had fun with Go Noodle.

Alison McGuire very kindly came into school to help the children plant vegetables in the school garden.  We planted a variety of vegetables including pumpkins, squash, beans, lettuce, chives, potatoes.  Hopefully our lovely scarecrows that we made with Alison in the first term will be in the garden soon to help protect our crops.. The children will care for the garden during breaks.
Waterspoutt
On Monday 13th February, Professor Kevin McGuigan from the Royal College of Surgeons Dublin came to speak to our pupils on the subject of providing clean, safe, drinking water in primary schools across rural Africa and other developing countries.  Kevin spoke to pupils about the difficulties and challenges which face these communities in finding water – which is usually unsafe to drink – and transporting it many kilometres home; a task which is often designated to the younger, primary aged children of the family to carry out. Kevin and his team here and in Africa work to get people harvesting rainwater in large concrete containers and then render it safe to drink using plastic bottles, racks to contain them, and solar power.  Each installation costs €1000 and enables a school to provide some 350 pupils and teachers with bottles of safe drinking water to take home at the end of each school day. The results are safer drinking water, fewer diseases and deaths caused by unsafe water, and children who are able to attend school on a more consistent basis.

On Shrove Tuesday after we had lots of pancakes, we had a sponsored walk to the Sports Field in Carnew to raise money to help provide a school in Uganda with safe drinking water.  1st – 6th Classes carried a small water bottle.  Together with Kilcommon N.S.  Coláiste Bhríde and the churches in the Tinahely Carnew group our goal is to raise €1,000 to provide one primary school in Uganda with a tank and bottles for safe water.  Please visit www.waterspoutt.eu for more information.
